Body weight has minimal impact on psilocybin dosing - John’s Hopkins

This study wades into the murky waters of finding the sweet spot for dosing psilocybin for therapeutic uses. Psilocybin, that wild, mind-bending substance with a knack for tackling depression, anxiety, and PTSD, still doesn’t have a set-in-stone ideal dose.

The researchers dug through the dirt of ten past studies, roping in data from 288 participants. Their mission? To pit weight-adjusted dosing against fixed dosing. Weight-adjusted dosing tweaks the dose to fit your body weight, while fixed dosing slaps the same amount on everyone, no matter if you’re a featherweight or a heavyweight.

What did they find in this mess? Turns out, there’s no solid link between body weight and how psilocybin hits you. Whether you got a dose based on your weight or a one-size-fits-all shot, the trip was pretty much the same.

With these findings, the researchers suggest fixed dosing is the way to go. It’s easier, cheaper, and just as effective as the weight-based method. Plus, in clinical trials, it skips the hassle of calculating doses for every Tom, Dick, and Harry.

But hold your horses, there’s a catch. This study had a small sample size and only looked at folks who had never dabbled with psilocybin before. We need more research to nail down these results and figure out the best doses for different therapeutic groups.

Let’s not forget, psilocybin is no joke. It’s a powerful psychedelic, and taking it can lead to anxiety and panic attacks. So, it’s crucial to use it responsibly, in a controlled setting, with someone who knows their shit keeping an eye on things.
